Canada's New Government Supports Harbourfront Centre

TORONTO, March 16, 2007 – The Honourable Beverley J. Oda, Minister of Canadian Heritage and Status of Women, today announced funding of up to $389,000 for Harbourfront Centre. These funds will be used to update seating and purchase specialized video monitoring and sound equipment for three of the Harbourfront Centre's performance spaces: the Premiere Dance Theatre, the Enwave Theatre, and the York Quay Centre. Today's announcement follows the commitment made by Canada's New Government in May 2006 to provide $25 million over five years to support the operational requirements of the Harbourfront Centre.

"The Harbourfront Centre is a significant cultural gathering place in Toronto," said Minister Oda. "Canada's New Government is pleased to support the enhancement of three theatres in the Centre. Following its commitment of $25 million over five years to the Harbourfront Centre announced in May 2006, today's announcement of $389,000 will enable the Harbourfront Centre to upgrade performance facilities and ensure the highest quality for performers and audiences alike."

"I am extremely grateful for this timely assistance from Canadian Heritage," said William J.S. Boyle, Chief Executive Officer of Harbourfront Centre. "This will help us update and improve our aging infrastructure and technical equipment on our 10-acre site. With this contribution we can proceed with improvements in our three theatre facilities and two outdoor stages. This will ensure a continuation of quality presentations to the ethnoculturally diverse audiences we service and the over 450 community groups we partner with annually."

This project will enable Harbourfront Centre to better serve the needs of the performing arts community in Toronto. As one of Canada's leading presenters of performing arts, the replacement and upgrade of aging equipment is important to maintain the quality of its presentations. The Harbourfront Centre is an innovative not-for-profit cultural organization that creates events and activities that stimulate, educate and entertain the public.

Canada's New Government is providing funding through the Cultural Spaces Canada program of the Department of Canadian Heritage. This program supports cultural infrastructure projects that increase access for Canadians to performing, visual, and media arts, and to museum collections, heritage displays, and exhibitions.

The Enwave Theatre

Harbourfront Centre Embarks on a New Partnership with the Unveiling of Enwave Theatre!

TORONTO, November 21, 2006 – William J.S. Boyle, Chief Executive Officer of Harbourfront Centre and Dennis Fotinos, President and Chief Executive Officer of Enwave Energy Corporation, today announced an exciting new partnership and a new name for Harbourfront Centre Theatre, which will now be known as Enwave Theatre.

“This theatre has played a major role in the celebration of contemporary culture which has unfolded over the past 33 years on our 10 acre site,” commented William Boyle. “Many of the world’s iconic performers have enthused, provoked, startled and fulfilled our cultural cravings over the years on this stage. Today I am happy to welcome a new site sponsor who understands the critical role that diversity of expression and cultural awareness play in our daily lives and proudly lends its name to one of our major facilities.”

When asked why he decided to develop the partnership with Harbourfront Centre, Enwave’s Dennis Fotinos explains, "Enwave and Harbourfront Centre are natural partners. We are both committed to developing and celebrating the many communities that bring life to the city of Toronto and we both are inextricably linked to Lake Ontario. We are very pleased to bring the Enwave name to an historic building that was originally a heating plant and is today the home to hundreds of performances and performers every year that demonstrate the vitality and creativity of Toronto."

Built in 1926, the Ice House, as it was first known, and its sister building the Power Plant, provided the heating and cooling for North America’s largest food warehouse situated just to the east which is now Queens Quay Terminal. A major redesign by Lett Smith Architects in 1986 with final renovations in 1991 produced the renowned performance space that today becomes known as the Enwave Theatre. Since opening, the theatre has hosted over 475 different performance groups from diverse world cultures and amassed a total of more than 10,000 individuals who have trod its boards to entertain countless enthusiastic audiences from around the globe.

Enwave is a Toronto based district energy corporation providing heating and cooling services to over 140 office buildings in the city’s downtown core. Enwave pioneered Deep Water Cooling, an innovative process which draws ice-cold water from 83 metres below the surface of Lake Ontario. This naturally cold water makes its way to an energy transfer station and Enwave’s closed chilled water supply loop, without entering the City’s water supply. This cold energy is then used to cool many of Toronto’s financial district office buildings, sporting facilities and other businesses. Enwave’s renewable energy resource provides an alternative technology to conventional air conditioning.
