#1/54 ALTAMIRA FREE PERFORMANCES August 12, 2004...Toronto,
Ontario... The National Ballet of Canada returns to Harbourfront Centre
on August 24, 25 and 26 with three free performances as part of the
annual ALTAMIRA BALLET BY THE WATER. The
National Ballet of Canada Orchestra led by Music Director and Principal
Conductor, ORMSBY WILKINS and Assistant
Conductor, NORMAN REINTAMM, will accompany the
free outdoor performances. Hosted by Artistic Associate KAREN
KAIN, the National Ballet will perform JAMES
KUDELKA'S Musings (Movements 1, 2 and 4) and there,
below as well as Dances from The
Sleeping Beauty. ALTAMIRA BALLET BY THE
WATER runs August 24, 25 and 26, 2004 at 8 pm at the CIBC
Stage and is being performed as part of the inaugural ALTAMIRA
SUMMER ARTS. The event is free and donations will be
accepted towards youth based arts programmes. James Kudelka's Musings
was originally created for ballerina KAREN KAIN,
and was commissioned by Nicholas Goldschmidt for The Glory of Mozart
Festival in 1991 to mark the 200th Anniversary of Mozart's death. When
the company performed the work in New York in 1998, Anna Kisselgoff of
The New York Times stated "Like the music, the choreography has
its intricacies beneath its lyrical surface." The opening
night cast will feature Principal Dancers JENNIFER
FOURNIER, SONIA RODRIGUEZ, ALEKSANDAR ANTONIJEVIC, First
Soloists STACEY SHIORI MINAGAWA, REBEKAH RIMSAY, NEHEMIAH
KISH, and Second Soloist JEAN-SÉBASTIEN COLAU.
Musings will also be performed in
its entirety as part of the National Ballet's Spring Season, from May
4-8, 2005. Kudelka's there,
below had its company premiere in the fall of 2003 to
strong critical acclaim: "sheer choreographic beauty...this
ballet reinforced Kudelka's image as a master of pas de deux" The
Toronto Star, 2003. Originally created for BalletMet in Columbus, Ohio
in 1989, the ballet features five couples, which will be performed on
opening night by First Soloist HEATHER OGDEN
with Principal Dancer GUILLAUME CÔTÉ, corps de
ballet member ALEJANDRA PEREZ-GOMEZ with First
Soloist PATRICK LAVOIE, corps de ballet member
SOPHIE LETENDRE with First Soloist RICHARD
LANDRY, Principal Dancer MARTINE LAMY
with First Soloist PIOTR STANCZYK and
Principal Dancers JENNIFER FOURNIER with RYAN
BOORNE. The company will also perform Dances
from The Sleeping Beauty, with the opening night cast
featuring Principal Dancers GRETA HODGKINSON
and ALEKSANDAR ANTONIJEVIC as Princess Aurora
and Prince Florimund, First Soloist STACEY SHIORI MINAGAWA
and Second Soloist KEIICHI HIRANO in the
Bluebird pas de deux and corps de ballet members TANYA
EVIDENTE and DAISUKE OHNO in the
