with new moves July 30th - August 2. Toronto’s perfect
compliment to Saturday’s fantastic Mas parade, Hot & Spicy’s 7th
edition brings together Caribbean, r'n'b, funk, soul, house and Latin
vibes enhanced with celebrity chefs and sizzling delicacies
from around the globe programmed in Islands of the

HIGHLIGHTS...
FOOD:
This year’s Stella Artois Hot & Spicy Festival takes visitors on a
culinary and artistic journey to Islands of the World
sampling the sizzling spices of the Indian and Pacific Oceans,
the Mediterranean and Caribbean seas. TV personality Emily
Richards from Canadian Living Cooks takes on Dwight Boswell of
Chalice Catering in a battle of culinary skill competing for the crown
of Hot and Spicy Iron Chef 2004. Renowned chefs from fabulous
Toronto eateries will show off their flare for cooking, share their
recipes with audiences and offer low-cost samples during food
demonstrations! Selected Food demonstrations will be accompanied
by
a dance performance that reflect the same cultures as the food
being prepared. At the Red Hot Market the public can sample and
stock-up on an eclectic variety of spiced foods, sauces, marinades and
dips.
MUSIC:
This year’s Stella Artois Hot & Spicy Festival is a musical
paradise featuring exciting new international artists with some of the
best DJ’s spinning hot on the waterfront with samba,
r&b, funk, hip hop, house and jazz emanating late into the
night. Hot new Brazilian singer Cibelle makes her anticipated
Toronto debut on the CIBC Stage. Cibelle explores sensual bossa
nova, down tempo electronica, samba and jazz. Detroit’s
renowned vocalist and keyboardist Amp Fiddler makes his
Toronto debut as a solo artist. Presented by Queens Quay Terminal, this
versatile performer has graced the records of Prince, George Clinton
and the Brand New Heavies. Amp Fiddler will be joined by Montreal’s Afrodizz,
a hot, new Afro-beat group that layers the groove with
horns, soulful vocals and elegant jazz guitar. Madagascar's
Jaojoby, the world’s leading exponents of Salegy delivers a mix of
electrified African pop rhythms with Malagasy folk songs.
Not-to-be-missed, Los Angeles Hip-Hop funk orchestra
Breakestra, led by Miles Tackett, makes their Harbourfront Centre
debut.
With four album releases, Daúde is another hot Brazilian
vocalist enjoying international success with her imaginative blend
of samba, funk, and hip hop. Montreal soca big band Jab
Jab will provide the festival jump up!
Late Night NOW presentd by Bluelight: Feel the heat with late
night live performances in
the “Brig”
(Brigantine room) Friday through Sunday. Celebrate CIUT radio show, Higher
Ground’s 8th anniversary with a funk throwdown by Jason Palma
and friends. Boogie all night long with Expansions as they spin
funk, house and hip hop by DJ’s Kola and Nav. Special guest A
Kid Names Miles. Do Right! Soundsystem DJ Kong, Circle
Research, Basic Soul Unit and DJ Fase with MC Abdominal
spin hip hop and funk with visuals
by Mix Motion.
DANCE, FILM, VISUAL ART, FASHION, THEATRE:
Highlights include food theme films, a global variety of dance groups,
a visual arts show inspired by the passion for all things hot and spicy
as well as original fashion and design and a commissioned theatre piece.
Dance: In addition to sizzling culinary sensations and explosive
musical performances, local dance groups including Ill Skillz, Goodness
Gracious Fire Dancers, Afro-Caribbean Dance, Latin
Dance Theatre, Dance Caribe, Caribbean Drum Ensemble,
Caribbean Folk Performers and The Swizzlestick Theatre.
On
Saturday and Monday
Guiomar Campbell will get hips swaying with a Samba Dance
Workshop. One of the festival’s
dance highlights will be a performance by the Canboulay Dance
Theatre featuring Ronald A. Taylor and Spirit Synott presenting
Flight on a Leach.
Film: This year’s film line-up promises to be more sizzling than
ever
with an All Food Film Series including acclaimed works Big
Night and
Chocolat. On Saturday The Toronto International Film
Festival Group
presentsthe hilarious film Undercover Brother as a thank
you to
the City of Toronto.
Visual Arts: Explore the visual arts show inspired by passion
for all
things Hot and Spicy. Nika Feldman curates an exhibit, commissioned
for the festival, of eight emerging artists from Canada and the
United
States using found objects to explore the Hot and Spicy
qualities of life.
Fashion-Design: Kristen Fahrig has prepared a
specially-commissioned
fashion piece Fuego, using hot and spicy food as her
inspiration and her
medium.
Theatre: Director PJ Hammond stages a commissioned
reading that will take audiences
through the energetic and sensual effect that food can have on your
life. If music be the food of love, then this is a rumba straight from
the Islands!
For the Kids! The Kidzone Tent will be open Saturday through
Monday.
Red Pepper Spectacle Arts invites kids to make and take their own
lanterns. FREE!

FOOD PROGRAMMES: This year’s food program theme is divided into

sections, each exploring hot and spicy culinary delicacies from
different Islands of the World:
Pacific Ocean: Saturday July 31st - Lakeside Terrace
Join Emmanuel Martin at 1:30 p.m as he whips up delicacies from
the
Philippines accompanied by a dance performance by Folklorico
Filipino.
At 3:30 p.m. from the Liaison College of Culinary Arts Chef Mick
Elliot
will entice your palette while the Melati Indonesian Dance Group
inspire the visual senses. At 5:00 p.m. Howard Chew from the
Restaurant
Malaysia will share the spicy secrets of dishes from Singapore.
Indian Ocean: Sunday August 1st - Lakeside Terrace
Sunday the festival conjures up the sites, smells and tastes of the
Indian Ocean. At 1:30 Arvinda Chauhan of the Woman’s Culinary
Network
cooks up Sri Lankan Spicy Cashew Curry accompanied by Mandakini
Dance.
At 5:30 Lola of Great Cooks and The T Spot prepares
Madagascar Vanilla
Citrus Salad in Philo cups.
Mediterranean Sea: Monday August 2nd- Lakeside Terrace
On Monday take a trip to the shores of the Mediterranean Sea where
starting at 1:30 Darren Glew of Court House Market Grille
cooks up
Sardinian Fish Cakes and Cucumber Salad followed by Amy
Fleischman of
Musa who will prepare Sauteed Dandelions and Cigarette Rolls
stuffed
with Spicy Meet and Pine Nuts.
Caribbean Sea: Saturday July 31st- Brigantine Tent
The spicy flavour of Caribbean cuisine can be sampled throughout the
weekend under the Blue Brigantine Awning. Beginning at 2:30 p.m. on
Saturday Chalice Catering chef Dwight Boswell will prepare Festival
with Fried Ripe Plantains and Curry Chicken. At 4:30 p.m. Josefa
Reyes
will share the secret of her recipe for Arroz con pollo a la
chorrera
(Rice with Spicy Chicken cooked with Vegetables and Beer).
Sunday August 1st at 2:00 p.m. Labatt Brewmaster Bill White and
Chef
Anthony Mair of Mardi Gras Restaurant kick starts the afternoon
with
their recipes for Jambalaya paired with beer (sampling will
include a tasting
of the food dish and beer). At 4:00 Ed Pottinger of Toronto’s
famous
The Real Jerk will prepare Jerk Chicken Pasta followed at 6:30
by The
Westin Harbour Castle’s Executive Chef Bruce Hanna who will
prepare Red
Snapper Escovitch with Rice and Peas.
The taste sensation continues into Monday when at 2:00 Ikeila
Wright of
Leaf of Life Catering will demonstrate the art of preparing Sizzling
Sweet Plantain suffed with Calalloo. At 4:30 Henri Pierre Jerome
of
Coco Banana Restaurant demonstrates how to make AKRA (fried
vegetables). On Monday at 5:30 at the Lakeside Terrace join TV
personality Emily Richards (Canadian Living Cooks) and Dwight
Boswell
(Chalice Catering as they square off in a battle of culinary
genious in
an Iron Chef Competition 2004.
