countries

TORONTO,
May 20, 2004-To debut or to premiere? That is the question Harbourfront
Centre delightfully answers this summer in announcing more
than 30 Toronto debuts, and more than 100 Harbourfront Centre
premieres, with its summer festival lineup.
Over 130 new
performances from more than 20 countries - in the disciplines of music,
dance, film and theatre - ignite the Harbourfront Centre site from late
June through Labour Day at ten festivals (including four new
festivals). Audiences will also enjoy improved access to the lakefront
as construction on the Harbourfront Centre Water's Edge project pauses
for the popular summer season.
Harbourfront
Centre Summer 2004 events take place at
Harbourfront Centre, located at 235 Queens Quay West in Toronto. All
events are free admission. For further information the public
can call 416-973-4000 or visit online at www.harbourfrontcentre.com
The depth and breadth
of the debuts move from a free concert from Rock icons Los
Lobos to rare cabaret performances from Can-Lit icon Tomson
Highway. Music highlights also include Grammy Award
winning World Jazz legend David Murray going
Guadeluepe with The Gwo-Ka Masters, Mexican songstress
Lila Downs (of Frida film fame), a new
Electronic music festival and much much more! A solo performance by
acclaimed Mexican dancer Serafin Aponte meshes with Wonderful
World
of Circus, which features former members of the
Moscow Circus and Cirque du Soleil. The ever
popular Free Flicks (presented by Stella Artois)
returns with a line-up
of musical flicks and animated films with the final offering of the
series including
pre-film bingo! Anything is indeed possible this summer - there are
plays in the pond and a ferris wheel that has cars instead of seats.
Even the literary world gets grooving when New York City's One
Ring Zero performs its selection of authored lyrics.
Four new
festivals launch at Harbourfront Centre this summer: Beats, Breaks
& Culture (July 9-11, presented by NOW Magazine) reroutes
the wattage of what
Electronic music means by presenting all live Electronic music
acts instead of DJs. As audiences dance at a site visually redesigned
to complement the music - grafitti artists create a huge art
installation, breakdancers compete and DJs remix kung-fu flicks. The Planet
IndigenUs festival (August 13-22) is an absolutely Aboriginal
affair presenting Indigenous artists from around the globe in all
disciplines. Co-presented by the Woodland Cultural Centre, Planet
IndigenUs is the largest festival of its kind ever staged in North
America, with events also occurring at seven
major arts institutions throughout the GTA. Omiala: A Festival
of New
Black Culture (July 23-25) gathers and provides a home for the
African-Canadian diaspora through celebration and expression. Ibutsa
Rwanda: Commemoration and Celebration (June 25-27) conjures
cathARTic release for all those directly and indirectly affected by the
horrific 1994 Rwandan genocide through profile panel
discussions, music, dance and documentary film
Returning festivals are
also redeveloped. Stella Artois World's Fare: A
Global Feast (July 2-4) incorporates Eastern European arts
and performers while Ritmo
y Color (July 16-18) partners with the some of Toronto's
most innovative Latin arts presenters like the Latin Alternative Music
Conference and the AluCine Film and Video Festival. The Stella
Artois Hot & Spicy
Food Festival moves to a new weekend (July 30 to August 2)
with The Island Soul Edition featuring the delicious food and
art of Islands worldwide. Masala! Mehndi! Masti!
(August 4-8, presented by OMNI Television) expands from three to five
days while Gobsmacked:
a revel of offbeat expression (ironically
derailed last year by that
strange blackout) returns to the world of the
wild, wacky and wonderful on August 27-29 (presented
by NOW Magazine). Ashkenaz: A Festival of New
Yiddish Culture
completes the lineup (September 3-6) with stellar International
and Canadian performers.
In addition to
the summer festivals, there are always a wide range of events occurring
at Harbourfront Centre in the summer. The Toronto Music Garden features
Classical and World music and dance performances every Thursday night
and Sunday afternoon while The Power Plant presents
exciting exhibitions (and the ferris wheel) by artist-architect John
Kormeling and Janet Cardiff: Forty Part Motet. Every
weekend audiences
can enjoy shopping at the International Marketplace
and casual dining at the World Cafe. Four profile
events continue at Harbourfront Centre this summer. Barbados
on the Water (June 11-13) is Canada's largest Bajan festival
featuring craft and limbo workshops, improvisational
comedians, art exhibits, energetic jump-up music and colourful dancing.
On
June 24, celebrate St. Jean Baptiste Day with Franco-fête
- a special evening concert
featuring dance and
Québécois chanson with leading talent direct from
'la belle province'.
Ballet
by the Water (August 24-26) features
The
National Ballet of Canada giving fans a rare free
admission opportunity
to partake in the pleasures of Canada’s leading ballet company in the
open air. The Altamira Summer Opera Concerts return August
31 to September 2 and features The
Canadian Opera Company Orchestra presenting
three free evenings of
arias and overtures.
Harbourfront
Centre Summer 2004 events take place at
Harbourfront Centre, 235 Queens Quay West in Toronto. All events are free
admission. For further information the public can call 416-973-4000
or visit online at www.harbourfrontcentre.com
Last,
and definitely not least - Harbourfront Centre
announces three Pier Party concerts at the CIBC Stage.
On June 19, World music vocalist extraordinaire Angélique
Kidjo performs on the heels of her new Caribbean
flavoured album Oyaya! ($20 advance/ $25 day of). On July
6, one of Africa's most influential performers (and a frequent
collaborator with Peter Gabriel) Youssou N'Dour makes a rare
Toronto appearance ($25 advance/ $30 day of). On July 27, the
first family of New Orleans The Neville Brothers perform in
Toronto for the first time in a decade. Consisting of Art, Charles,
Cyril, Aaron, and Ivan Neville, the group takes audiences on a tour de
force of R&B, Funk and Soul ($30 advance/ $35 day of). For
all concerts - doors open at 7 p.m.,
opening acts perform at 8 p.m. Headline acts play from 9:30
p.m. to 11 p.m. Tickets are now on sale at the Harbourfront Centre Box
Office at 416-973-4000 and on-line at www.harbourfrontcentre.com
