Directed by Vena

(UK/Canada) CANADIAN PREMIERE
2005 4 minutes
This short film (part of the
4 X 4 film series) indulges and
questions the pleasure of looking at a moving body. It alternates
between the
bejewelled splendour of the costumed dancing body of bharata Natyam and
an
unfamiliar and alienating flesh body.
Minou
Directed by Magali
Charrier (UK)
2002 6.5 minutes
Minou explores the rich and
imaginative domestic life of a solitary young woman through her
romantic
aspirations and quirky relationships with the objects in her flat.
Silo
Directed by Laura Taler; performed by the
women of URGE (Canada)
1999 5 minutes
In the
restrictive confines of a circular room, five beautiful women
communicate
through sound; cackles, hisses, whispers, giggles and hushes. This film
focuses
on the women of Urge (Linda Catlin Smith, Fides Krucker, Marie-Josée
Chartier,
Katherine Duncanson and Anita La Selva) as they use a broad range of
movement,
gestures and vocal techniques to suggest a slightly sinister lullaby.
Elizabeth
Langley: Light Years
Directed
by Jenn Goodwin (Canada)
2003 8 minutes
Elizabeth Langley
is one of Canada’s
unsung heroes of dance. On her 70th birthday, she contemplates death,
celebrates life and continues to dance like no one is watching.
Motion
Control
Directed by David Anderson;
choreographed and performed by Liz Aggiss (UK)
2003 8 minutes
Take one
glamorous and aging dancer. Trap her in the real world then smash into
her
private reality. Control her movement, contain her emotion. Well, you
can try,
but she’s already beaten you to it. With hyper-sound and super smart
awareness,
submit to this bizarre journey of entrapment.
Three
Directed by Isaac Julian;
choreographed by Ralph Lemon and Bebe Miller (USA)
1999 17 minutes
Three juxtaposes scenes of
dancing, which appear at times to be ethereal, tender, carnal and
aggressive,
with symbolically weighted images and scenes of mundane, actual life.
Interwoven with the dance scenes are images of falling, reflection,
classical
theatre and the street; voice-over text spoken by Lemon, Miller and
actress
Cleo Sylvester, a collage of music. The result is a film densely
layered with
movement, image and sound that delves into a personal relationship
between a
man and a woman by exposing the forces beneath obvious physicality,
social
history and sexual politics.
