International Readings at Harbourfront Centre Presents The World In Literature (and some pictures)

Toronto, April 25, 2005-Visit Harbourfront Centre Wednesday evenings this May for International Readings featuring Man Booker Prize nominee Achmat Dangor, rising Canlit stars Joseph Boyden and David Layton as well as our first ever event entirely dedicated to graphic novels. All readings take place at Harbourfront Centre, 235 Queens Quay West at 7:30 p.m. Tickets $8, free for members and students (with valid ID). Joseph Boyden, Achmat Dangor and Christine Pountney

Joseph Boyden is the author of Born with a Tooth, a collection of stories Areminiscent of the best of Tomson Highway=s work@ (Globe and Mail). He reads from Three Day Road, a new novel inspired in part by Francis Pegamahgabow, the great native sniper of World War One.

Achmat Dangor is a celebrated author and until recently was the Executive Director of the Nelson Mandela Foundation. He reads from his Man Booker Prize and Dublin IMPAC Literary Award nominated novel Bitter Fruit, Aa haunting story of a family disintegrating, wonderfully authentic in its context, gender and generation@ (The Independent).

Christine Pountney Ais a writer to watch@ (Time Out UK). She is the author of the Orange Prize nominated novel, Last Chance Texaco. Pountney reads from her second novel, The best way you know how, an unflinching, insightful and witty analysis of modern marriage.

Tamas Dobozy, Andrew Pyper and Sue Miller

Tamas Dobozy=s work has appeared in journals throughout North America and in 1995 he won the subTerrain short fiction contest. He is the author of When X Equals Marylou, a collection of stories and Doggone, a novel. Dobozy reads from Last Notes, a new book of stories.

Andrew Pyper is the author of Kiss Me, Lost Girls and The Trade Mission, which was selected by the Toronto Star as a Top 10 Best Book of the Year. He reads from Wildfire Season, a new psychological thriller set in the furthest reaches of the Yukon.

Sue Miller is the author of a number of books, including Inventing the Abbotts and the Abeautiful, compelling@ memoir The Story of My Father (San Francisco Chronicle). She reads from Lost in the Forest, a new novel.

David Layton Awrites my favourite kind of proseBclean as a whistle, straight ahead and, most important, irresistibly readable. No froth or curlicues for this guy" (David Gilmour). He is author of the acclaimed memoir Motion Sickness. Layton reads from his new novel The Bird Factory.

Kathryn Kuitenbrouwer is the author of Way Up, a collection of stories. She is a former editor of The Literary Review of Canada and a reviewer for The National Post, Books in Canada and The Globe and Mail. Kuitenbrouwer reads from her new novel, The Nettle Spinner.

Ilona Van Mil is an instructor at the University of Essex. She reads from Sugarmilk Falls, a remarkable debut novel that captures the spirit and repression of a blighted Northern Ontario community as it slowly turns in on itself.

Geneviève Castrée’s graphic novels include Lait Frappé and Roulathèque Roulathèque Nicolore. She is also the creator of Pamplemoussi, an innovative combination of comics, music and poetry. A selection of her new work will be featured in the 2005 edition of Draw & Quarterly Showcase.

Tony Millionaire is the creator of Maakies, one of the most popular weekly comic strips in America. He has been named "Best Cartoonist" four out of the last five years by readers of The New York Press for his work chronicling the adventures of an alcoholic and suicidal crow at sea.

Gary Panter is a three time Emmy Award winner for his production design on Pee-Wee=s Playhouse and the creator of Jimbo, one of the pillars of the legendary RAW magazine. He presents Satiro-Plastic the first volume of his collected sketchbooks.
